November is a rewarding time to visit Vietnam, but the best destinations depend on what kind of trip you want. Northern cities and landscapes can be comfortable for exploring, Phu Quoc is moving toward its favorable beach season, and the central coast deserves extra rain and flood planning. This guide combines long-term seasonal patterns with official 2026 outlooks, without pretending a seasonal forecast can predict the weather on your exact dates.

What is different about November 2026?
Vietnam’s National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) expects a very strong El Niño to persist into early 2027. Its seasonal outlook indicates a 15–30% increase in November rainfall in Northern Vietnam compared with the long-term average. For parts of Central Vietnam the same seasonal outlook describes a rainfall deficit of 20–40 mm (a quantity, not a percentage). Meanwhile, the separate October 21–November 20 monthly outlook indicates near-average rainfall in much of the north and 20–40% below-average rainfall in other areas of Central Vietnam. These statements describe different forecast periods, so should not be treated as contradictory day-by-day predictions.
- A 96% probability is reported for very strong El Niño conditions during November 2026–January 2027. It is not a 96% chance of dry or dangerous weather in any specific city.
- Average temperatures are forecast generally above the historical norm; rain and severe-weather episodes remain possible.
- Cold-air incursions affecting Northern and Central Vietnam may be weaker than usual in the October 21–November 20 outlook, but short cold spells can still occur in mountain areas.
- Heavy rainfall can be concentrated into short events, so below-average monthly totals do not eliminate floods, flash floods, landslides or rough seas.
- Fewer tropical storms than average are forecast for the relevant period, but that does not remove the need to check official weather and marine alerts.

Best places to visit in November
Hanoi: Culture, food and early-winter atmosphere
November often feels better for walking around Hoan Kiem Lake, the Old Quarter and museums than the humid summer months. Hanoi’s fragrant hoa sua season can linger into autumn, although flowering varies. For 2026, bring rain protection despite the cooler season: the national seasonal outlook expects above-average rain across Northern Vietnam. Spend two to three nights if possible and compare routes in our Hanoi month-by-month guide and Hanoi 24/48-hour itinerary.
Ninh Binh: Scenic rivers and countryside
Boat rides, limestone cliffs and historic sites make Ninh Binh a strong match for a northern itinerary. Rain or mist can affect visibility and boat operations. If your schedule allows, consider sleeping locally instead of squeezing everything into a rushed excursion. Compare options in Ninh Binh day trip vs overnight.
Ha Long Bay: A cruise with a weather contingency
Cooler conditions may be appealing aboard a cruise, but authorities can suspend or prohibit sailings when marine weather is unsafe. An operator booking does not guarantee permission to depart. Leave breathing room before an international flight, ask about weather cancellations in writing, and compare day trip vs overnight cruise alongside Ha Long Bay seasonal conditions.
Ha Giang and Sa Pa: Mountain scenery and buckwheat flowers
Ha Giang’s buckwheat flowers commonly appear around October–November, particularly in the Dong Van area. Peak bloom cannot be guaranteed for a specific date in 2026. Sa Pa offers mountain landscapes, though fog can limit views. While forecast cold-air activity may be weaker than usual, mountain temperatures can still fall sharply for short periods. Use warm layers and avoid self-driving challenging mountain routes unless properly qualified and experienced. Read the Sa Pa seasonal guide.
Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta: Flexible Southern exploration
Southern Vietnam is transitioning toward a drier period, but November can still feature showers. Ho Chi Minh City offers museums, local food and indoor alternatives. In the Mekong Delta, late-season floodwater landscapes vary by river and year; do not promise peak flooding. Compare Ho Chi Minh City weather and where to go in the Mekong Delta.
Phu Quoc: Beach plans plus evening entertainment
Phu Quoc usually moves toward a more favorable beach season in November, although sea conditions still vary. Symphony of the Sea Season 3 is scheduled to begin November 10, 2026; that is an upcoming plan, not a guarantee that a particular performance will take place. Check event schedules, transport distances and ticket rules. Explore Phu Quoc’s seasonal guide, where to stay and Phu Quoc at Night.
Where to be more cautious
Hoi An and Hue: Flood-sensitive central destinations
October and November are particularly important months for monitoring heavy rain and flooding around Central Vietnam. Hoi An’s low-lying riverside areas can become difficult to access; Hue may also experience disruptions. Rain does not automatically mean flooding, but serious warnings take priority over sightseeing plans. The relevant 2026 outlook does not justify treating the region as universally dry just because average monthly rain may be lower. For a month-by-month comparison see Best Time to Visit Da Nang & Hoi An. For a practical go / adjust / postpone checklist, see our Hoi An Rainy Season Decision Guide.
Da Nang, Nha Trang and Quy Nhon: Do not promise a beach holiday
All three can offer food, cultural activities and hotels in November, yet a trip requiring predictable sunshine, snorkeling or calm seas is higher risk than many Southern alternatives. For Nha Trang and Cam Ranh, review the local beach-season guide. Consider flexible reservations and avoid non-refundable marine excursions during periods of uncertainty.
What experiences are special in November?
| Experience | Where | Reality check |
|---|---|---|
| Buckwheat flowers | Ha Giang / Dong Van | Season generally overlaps October–November; verify 2026 blooms locally |
| Milk-flower atmosphere | Hanoi | Seasonal fragrance, not a scheduled event |
| Late flood-season waterways | Mekong Delta | Water levels differ by area and year |
| Symphony of the Sea Season 3 | Phu Quoc | Expected from November 10; confirm actual show dates |
| Cool-season cruising | Ha Long Bay | Subject to authority-issued sailing decisions |

Airport and transport details worth checking
Noi Bai (Hanoi)
Airport ride-hailing arrangements can change; recent guidance places T2 ride-hailing pickups at P1. Confirm the terminal, the current app pickup pin and your actual meeting point, rather than accepting unsolicited drivers. For step-by-step options see Hanoi Airport to City Center and Vietnam Airport Arrival Survival Guide.
Long Thanh versus Tan Son Nhat: Confirm the ticketed airport
Vietnam’s Long Thanh airport is still preparing for a phased commercial opening. As of October 2026, ACV’s reported target is around December 24, 2026, not a confirmed December 1 start. If your journey extends into December, check your airline’s exact departure and arrival airport on the issued ticket and reconfirm close to travel. Do not assume a flight will move to Long Thanh based on an announcement. Read the Vietnam Airport Arrival Survival Guide and the October 5 airport progress report.
Five avoidable booking mistakes
- Assuming Vietnam has one climate zone or that Northern Vietnam will be rain-free.
- Confusing long-range probabilities with a daily forecast.
- Choosing a non-refundable Central Vietnam hotel simply because it looks cheap.
- Scheduling a weather-sensitive Ha Long cruise immediately before an international flight.
- Failing to reconfirm airline terminals, departure airports and pickup instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Is November a good month to visit Vietnam?
Often yes, especially for a well-planned Northern or North–South itinerary. Match destinations to your activities, not a blanket nationwide weather claim.
Will Northern Vietnam be dry in November 2026?
Not necessarily. NCHMF’s November seasonal outlook forecasts 15–30% more rain than average in the north. Carry rain gear and review shorter-range updates.
Should I avoid Hoi An in November?
Not automatically. The decision depends on official warnings, your flexibility, accommodation access and whether you need reliable outdoor weather.
Is Phu Quoc or Nha Trang better for beaches?
Phu Quoc is typically the more favorable November choice for a beach-oriented holiday, though sea conditions remain important on your exact dates.
Can Ha Long cruise departures be canceled?
Yes. Local authorities may stop departures for unsafe marine conditions. Get refund and rescheduling policies in writing.
Can I see all three regions in seven days?
It is possible, but transfers may overwhelm the experience. Seven days usually work better with one region or a focused two-region plan.
Does El Niño guarantee dry weather?
No. El Niño shifts seasonal odds and does not prevent localized heavy rain, floods or storms.
What should I pack?
Pack light layers and a rain jacket for the north, warmer clothing for mountain areas, and breathable clothes plus sun and rain protection for the south.
The RoamDecide verdict
Choose Northern Vietnam if culture and landscapes come first; choose a North–South trip for variety; consider Phu Quoc for beaches. Central Vietnam can still be rewarding, but its November rainfall and disruption risks deserve extra flexibility. The 2026 forecast also makes it clear that northern destinations should not be advertised as dry-weather guarantees.
