Best Time to Visit Ha Long Bay (2027): Month-by-Month Guide

Best time to visit Ha Long Bay infographic with monthly cruise weather

When should you visit Ha Long Bay?

April and November are our first choices for a Ha Long Bay cruise. April generally brings warmer, more comfortable sightseeing conditions, while November is cooler and often pleasant on deck. May and October are also worth considering, but no month guarantees blue skies or a sailing without disruption.

The choice depends on what you want: clear views, kayaking, cooler weather, or simply a cruise that fits your Vietnam itinerary. This guide focuses on when to go, rather than which boat to book. To choose a mainland base near your confirmed cruise terminal, compare where to stay in Ha Long Bay: Bai Chay, Hon Gai or Tuan Chau.

How the seasons affect your trip

Spring: March to May

Spring is a comfortable choice for spending time outdoors. March can still be misty, April usually offers a good balance for sightseeing, and May brings warmer weather that may suit kayaking. Rain and humidity generally increase as summer approaches.

Summer: June to August

Summer can be beautiful, but weather disruption is a serious planning consideration. On 19 July 2025, the tourist boat Vinh Xanh 58 capsized during a sudden thunderstorm on Ha Long Bay, causing dozens of deaths. This tragedy shows that dangerous weather can develop rapidly, even during a day trip. The Quang Ninh provincial authorities reported the incident; the Vietnam News Agency also reported the rescue operation.

If you travel in summer, pay attention to official local weather and maritime warnings, confirm life-jacket and safety procedures, and choose an operator with clear weather-cancellation terms. A sunny morning is not a safety guarantee for the afternoon. Never pressure an operator to sail when restrictions are in place.

Autumn: September to November

October and November can be excellent for sightseeing, but September remains vulnerable to major storms. After Typhoon Yagi struck in September 2024, tourist boats resumed normal operation on 13 September 2024, nearly a week after the storm. We favor November over September for travelers with fixed cruise dates; late storms are still possible in October.

Winter: December to February

Cool weather and mist give the limestone islands a different appearance. Some visitors love the quieter atmosphere; others miss the wide-open views they expected. Pack a jacket for time on deck and do not choose winter primarily for swimming.

Before you book a cruise

Compare three practical details: the actual departure port, the weather-cancellation policy, and what safety information the operator provides. Ha Long Bay departures may use Ha Long International Passenger Port in Bai Chay or Tuan Chau International Passenger Port. Lan Ha Bay itineraries may depart via Cat Ba. Confirm the port and transfer details shown on your specific booking.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Ha Long Bay?

April is our first choice for many first-time visitors, with November a close alternative. Neither guarantees clear weather.

Is Ha Long Bay worth visiting in December?

Yes, especially if you enjoy cooler temperatures and misty scenery. Visibility may be reduced, and swimming is less appealing.

Should I avoid Ha Long Bay in July?

July brings greater thunderstorm and tropical-storm uncertainty. If you travel then, prioritize safety guidance, flexible bookings and a backup day.

Can Ha Long Bay cruises be canceled for bad weather?

Yes. Authorities can restrict or suspend departures when conditions are unsafe. This can affect both day and overnight cruises. Check official warnings and your operator’s refund or rescheduling terms.

Our verdict

Choose April or November if you can select your dates. Consider May for warmer outdoor conditions, and December–February if cool, misty scenery appeals to you. Be especially cautious with inflexible summer and September plans. A cruise that fits your travel dates and safety needs is more important than chasing a supposedly perfect month.
