December through March is our first choice for a beach-focused Phu Quoc holiday. November and April can work, but both sit nearer seasonal transitions. If you’re visiting in November 2027, there is an extra consideration: Phu Quoc is preparing to host the APEC Leaders’ Week that month, with exact dates not yet confirmed.
The most useful question isn’t only whether the island is rainy. It’s which coastline is exposed to the wind, whether swimming and boat trips are safe, and how flexible your bookings are.
Phu Quoc weather by month: official rainfall and rain days
The following are long-term station averages from the Ministry of Construction’s QCVN 02:2022/BXD Table A.25 (rainfall) and Table A.28 (rain days), row 150, Phu Quoc meteorological station. They are not observations or forecasts for 2027.
| Month | Rainfall (mm) | Rain days | What it means for travelers |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 27.7 | 4.6 | Excellent beach-season starting point |
| February | 27.2 | 3.7 | Usually drier; Tet may affect arrangements |
| March | 61.0 | 6.6 | Beach and snorkeling potential |
| April | 148.2 | 11.7 | Hotter, with rainfall increasing |
| May | 280.8 | 19.0 | Wet-season transition; keep plans flexible |
| June | 381.9 | 21.0 | Southwest monsoon and rough-sea risk |
| July | 419.2 | 22.5 | Boat trips more weather-dependent |
| August | 485.6 | 23.6 | Wettest month in station averages |
| September | 473.6 | 22.8 | Very rainy; prioritize flexible plans |
| October | 354.2 | 21.5 | Transition month, still substantial rain |
| November | 163.5 | 13.8 | Weather improves; APEC 2027 and beach debris checks |
| December | 59.1 | 6.2 | Strong option for a beach-focused stay |
Reading the data: October averages 354.2 mm and 21.5 rain days; November falls to 163.5 mm and 13.8 days. January and February average less than 30 mm each. These numbers explain seasonal trade-offs, but rainfall does not establish sea safety or underwater visibility.
Data integrity: The official annual cells report 2,881.9 mm rainfall and 177.1 rain days. Summing the individually rounded monthly figures gives 2,882.0 mm and 177.0 days. We retain the printed monthly and annual figures without silently altering either.
Choose the season for the trip you want
| Trip priority | Starting window | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Beach-first first visit | December–March | Popular dates can be busy |
| Snorkeling and An Thoi islands | November–April, subject to daily sea state | Route, safety, visibility and cancellation matter |
| Quiet resort with pool and backup activities | Flexible shoulder or wet-season dates | Rain and rough seas may limit beaches |
| Trip fixed for July–September | Resort plus land-based alternatives | Avoid relying on offshore tours |
| Trip fixed for November 2027 | Check APEC schedule and beach conditions | Potential event logistics and northeast-wind debris |
December to March: the strongest starting point
Vietnam Tourism and Lonely Planet both describe November–April as Phu Quoc’s broadly favorable dry-season window. We recommend the narrower December–March period for travelers with only a few days and a strong preference for beach activities. That is an editorial choice based on rainfall patterns and reduced exposure to the wet-season transition, not a promise of daily sunshine.
Dry-season travel can attract stronger hotel demand, particularly around holidays. Compare room rates for your actual dates and check refunds; fixed claims about a particular month always being cheaper are not reliable.

April, October and November: transitions are not interchangeable
April still offers beach opportunities but is becoming hotter and wetter. October is a markedly wetter transition month than November in the Phu Quoc station records. Vietnam Tourism’s destination page favors November–April, while a Vietnam Airlines guide includes October. Some broad national weather descriptions also draw the seasonal boundary differently. For boat-dependent travel, our advice uses the more cautious distinction supported by local station rainfall.
Which coast should you choose?
November 2027 has two extra checks. Northeast winds can wash marine debris onto some east-facing beaches, as documented by Lonely Planet, and APEC Leaders’ Week is planned for that month. Neither means all east-coast beaches will be dirty or that the entire island will be disrupted.

May to October: southwest-monsoon exposure
During prevailing southwest-monsoon conditions, west-facing shores can be more exposed to waves. Some east and southeast beaches around Sao and Khem may be more sheltered depending on the actual wind direction. That is a reason to ask about conditions, not a blanket endorsement of swimming at a specific beach.
Northeast winds and east-coast debris
As the wind regime changes, west-coast areas may be calmer on certain days. Around October–November, wind-blown debris can collect at east-facing beaches. Conditions vary by beach, currents and cleaning frequency; resort-managed stretches may be maintained differently from public beaches. Ask for recent photos and current swimming advice.
| Conditions | Practical beach decision |
|---|---|
| December–March | Consider west-coast beaches, then verify waves and lifeguards |
| May–September | Compare sheltered east/southeast locations; check currents |
| October–November | Ask about both wave exposure and east-coast debris |
| Any month | Check swimming warnings, water quality and local conditions daily |
Snorkeling and island-hopping need their own safety check
The season alone cannot guarantee a successful snorkeling trip. Water clarity, currents, wind and operator decisions determine whether An Thoi excursions work on a particular day. November–April is a planning window, not a safety certification. Before paying, confirm the site, route-change policy, life jackets, briefing and refund terms. Never ask a boat crew to sail against a safety warning. For detailed differences between the sea and park experiences, see Hon Thom Cable Car vs Island-Hopping in Phu Quoc.
APEC Leaders’ Week: plan carefully for November 2027
At a June 2026 workshop, a vice chair of the Phu Quoc Special Zone People’s Committee stated that APEC 2027 Leaders’ Week would take place in November 2027. The specific days have not been confirmed in the evidence reviewed for this guide. The timing must also be coordinated with other major international summit schedules.
Authorities are preparing airport, conference, road and urban infrastructure. These projects are confirmed, but island-wide hotel shortages, security restrictions and road closures are not established facts. For November travel, prioritize flexible bookings and check official event and access announcements before departure.

Tet 2027 and the island’s new administrative status
Tet: The announced public-sector holiday runs from 4 to 10 February 2027. Private hotels, restaurants and operators can follow different schedules. Check transport and bookings around the holiday.
Administrative change: Since July 2025 Phu Quoc has been a special administrative zone within An Giang Province following Vietnam’s reorganization. Older guides may still use the former Kien Giang provincial label.

If your travel dates are fixed
| Travel period | More resilient decision |
|---|---|
| December–February | Book desired accommodation early if dates coincide with holidays |
| March–April | Prioritize beach activities while allowing for heat |
| May–June | Choose resorts with land-based alternatives |
| July–September | Avoid non-refundable plans relying on several boat excursions |
| October | Check the actual sea and beach rather than assuming the dry season |
| November 2027 | Recheck APEC dates, road access and east-coast cleaning conditions |
A flexible four-day Phu Quoc itinerary
Day 1: Arrive, check the nearest beach and settle in. Day 2: Enjoy a beach or resort day where swimming conditions are suitable. Day 3: Book an An Thoi island or snorkeling trip only if sea conditions and the operator permit; keep a land-based alternative. Day 4: Explore markets, food or other non-boat activities before departure.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Phu Quoc?
December through March is our preferred starting period for a beach-first holiday. November and April can work with additional checks.
When is Phu Quoc’s rainy season?
Generally May–October, with substantial year-to-year and day-to-day variation.
Is August worth visiting?
It may suit a flexible resort holiday, but the Phu Quoc station records its highest monthly average rainfall in August. Don’t make offshore excursions the only reason for the trip.
Is October a good beach month?
October is still relatively wet in the station climate averages. Avoid treating it as equally reliable as the core dry season.
Which coast is better during the rainy season?
Some east/southeast areas may be sheltered from southwest winds, but actual currents, waves and water quality determine whether swimming is appropriate.
Is November 2027 a good time to visit?
Weather often improves, but planned APEC events and possible east-coast debris merit extra checks for that particular year.
What is the best season for snorkeling?
November–April is a useful starting period. Daily sea conditions, underwater visibility and tour-operator safety decisions take priority.
Our verdict
Choose December–March for a beach-focused holiday with fewer wet-season complications. October remains transitional, and November 2027 requires specific APEC and east-coast beach checks. During the southwest monsoon, select coast and activities with flexibility instead of trusting a generic sunny-island photograph.
